One difficulty is that the existing pressure pattern is disturbed by the sensor placed at the interface . A second problem is that, in general, the interface between the residual limb and the socket is not Ua1, but may be either concave or convex. The first problem is often solved by countersinking the sensor in the socket wall . This, of course, requires removal of materiul from the socket wall, and if measurements were to be made at a large number of places in the socket, lasting damage might be done to the socket . For this reason, we decided to develop a sensor which can stick to the inner surface of the socket wall . In order to disturb as little as possible the existing pressure pattern, such a sensor should be very thin. The second problem (of the curved interface) could be solved by making the sensor flexible. We have not succeeded in finding a transducer which can be placed at the interface while satisfying the abovementioned requirements. Therefore, we have chosen a solution in which the pressure is transmitted first in the form of a hydraulic pressure signal . This hydraulic pressure is then measured with a transducer outside the socket, where more space is available. This has been schematically represented in Figure 1.

Characterization of interfacial socket pressure in transhumeral prostheses: A case series

One of the most important factors in successful upper limb prostheses is the socket design. Sockets must be individually fabricated to arrive at a geometry that suits the user's morphology and appropriately distributes the pressures associated with prosthetic use across the residual limb. In higher levels of amputation, such as transhumeral, this challenge is amplified as prosthetic weight and ...

Review of the Socket Design and Interface Pressure Measurement for Transtibial Prosthesis

Socket is an important part of every prosthetic limb as an interface between the residual limb and prosthetic components. Biomechanics of socket-residual limb interface, especially the pressure and force distribution, have effect on patient satisfaction and function. This paper aimed to review and evaluate studies conducted in the last decades on the design of socket, in-socket interface pressu...

Residual limb volume change: systematic review of measurement and management.

Management of residual limb volume affects decisions regarding timing of fit of the first prosthesis, when a new prosthetic socket is needed, design of a prosthetic socket, and prescription of accommodation strategies for daily volume fluctuations. This systematic review assesses what is known about measurement and management of residual limb volume change in persons with lower-limb amputation....

Parametric analysis using the finite element method to investigate prosthetic interface stresses for persons with trans-tibial amputation.

A finite element (FE) model of the below-knee residual limb and prosthetic socket was created to investigate the effects of parameter variations on the interface stress distribution during static stance. This model was based upon geometric approximations of anthropometric residual limb geometry. The model was not specific to an individual with amputation, but could be scaled to approximate the ...

A comparison between the dimensions of positive transtibial residual limb molds prepared by air pressure casting and weight-bearing casting methods

Background: Creating a socket with proper fit is an important factor to ensure the comfort and control of prosthetic devices. Several techniques are commonly used to cast transtibial stumps but their effect on stump shape deformation is not well understood. This study compares the dimensions, circumferences and volumes of the positive casts and also the socket comfort between two casting method...
